Much has been said about the Age of Information. The emergence of new technologies  on how we share information has revolutionized the way we do many things. Through these new technologies, the world is now a much smaller place with each of us linked to the rest of humanity at breakneck speed and thus provided with a lot of opportunities that were inconceivable prior to the arrival of these technologies. For us Filipinos, as  it is for all others in the not-so-developed parts of the world, these new technologies have been a source of excitement and jubilation.

At the threshold of this Age of Information is an emergent knowledge-based-society-the symbol of our new way of living. And borne out of this are new opportunities for employment. As such, how are we able to harness our intellectual and technological abilities shall determine whether or not we can become the knowledge workers of the future. And while we compete with other countries in terms of technology that will empower a whole generation of Filipinos to land lucrative jobs.

Indeed, I admit based on my teaching experience that technology is simply a tool in learning. It has advanced dramatically the learning of a student. Technology, particularly computers may have yielded good results on students’ effective learning is not really acceptable. Teachers are still the best source of learning.

It is a truism, however, that many problems are besetting education nationwide. These problems may include unqualified and poorly trained teachers, inadequate facilities and equipment and lack of institutional materials.

Due to these problems, educational reforms, progress and projects are needed to address the problems. These educational reforms may, in long run, redound to acquire quality of basic education, relevance and efficiency of the educational system.

Again with the onset of the Age of Information and the emergence of new technologies, teachers and students as well may find the real situations fitted for their academic intelligence.
