If we are to look into the values of our children today, they have gone down very low. The different value formation trainings launched by the Department of Education to teachers many years ago seems useless. Character Education taught as a subject and also integrated in the different learning areas did not show any development on the part of the children. The effort of the teachers in molding these children seemed to be futile. They have employed different methods and strategies to straighten the attitudes of school children, but the results are still embarrassing – students with no good manners and right conduct.

What could be the reason why the values of students are degrading? Who is to be blamed for the very embarrassing attitude of students? Is it the teachers or the parents? Parents are the first teacher of the child. Whatever values formed at home will be brought out by the child in a larger group. These values could affect his peers. What child value is exemplified by his parents. Parents must then very careful in initiating attitudes since children are good credible to impose discipline on their children. At home, they should guard the television programs for the child. They should know who the child goes with. His hobbies are to be monitored also.

Teachers in return should teach the child how to behave around other people, how they act in public alone. Values are not only to let people know or to be shown to people but they must be inherent. They must be practiced daily and become a part of his life. What the child learned in school must be strengthened at home.

Parents and teachers are partners in molding the character of the child. Each of them should exert effort in directing the child. Each one has a role to play in the guidance of the child so that he will be properly directed and become an upright citizen of the future.
