What is morale? Why is it important? How does security affect the teacher’s morale? Morale refers to the collection of attitudes, feelings and sentiments of individuals and groups toward their work environment and toward voluntary cooperation to the full extent of their ability in the best interest of the organization.
“Security in the public schools involves tenure, pension plans, group insurance, hospitalization and cumulative sick leave.”
Kimbal Wiles states that a morale is the emotional and mental reaction of a person to his job. Jack Culvertson defines morale as a climate of satisfaction, arising from good interpersonal relations and feeling among employees that they are progressing toward mutually accepted and worthwhile goals.
Morale affects the amount of work a person does. If morale is high, a staff will do its best to promote effective. Learning. If morale is low, teachers will not live up to their potential ability, and the school will operate far below its maximum efficiency. High morale is desirable in that it assists in achieving organizational ends. It follows therefore that the higher the morale, the more secure person feels. Morale is intangible; it cannot be seen or isolated. But it is possible to determine the quality of morale by careful observation of the way people act. Industry has found positive correlation between morale and high rate of absenteeism and tardiness.
The effectiveness of an organization is enhanced when the organization provides security for its members. Different members of the group have different individual needs, but the need of security is universal. The universal craving for security makes it essential that this need be met by any group, regardless of political philosophy. As a matter of fact, security is no less present in formal groups such as educational organizations, than informal groups. Therefore, the worth of the individual should not be ignored by the organization. Furthermore, the organization can better achieve its own purpose by conserving and improving the members of the organizations.
“Morale is both an index of a sound employment situation and positive means of building an efficient organization. “ – DUCKER
