Managing pupils with behavioral problems is said to be one of the most difficult part of being a teacher. Children come to school with a variety of emotional and life challenges which cause them to display such  behavioral problems. These are some ways on how to deal with these pupils appropriately.

1.Be understanding and emphatic to them

We as teacher should always bear in mind that children are unique individuals. They came from different walks of life which may cause them to misbehave. Always remember that kids need support and trusting relationship to help them grow and improve and this will only happen if you as teachers and as their second parents in school, will make them feel that you understand them. It will be easy to put their trust on you therefore will yield into improved discipline outcomes.

2. Don’t scold and yell at them

Yelling and scolding is often linked with increased conduct or behavioral problems, increased level of aggression and interpersonal problems with parents. Yelling will just make them feel rejected or disliked by you thus, losing their trust on you and the chance of confiding themselves on you.

3. Make them feel you’re willing to help

Labeling them as troublemaker inside the classroom will not help. Instead, talking to them in private will help a lot. Make him feel that even though everybody seems against him, you as his teacher can be his friend. Make him understand that you do not dislike him but instead you only dislike his actions. Whatever his problems are make him feel that he can always count on you and talk to you and you’re ready to listen anytime.

4. Give positive reinforcement

Every time a misbehaved pupil will do any good act, never forget to praise him and tell him that what he did made you happy. A simple smile or thank you in exchange of his good positive behavior will make them respond well. You as teacher should actively look for reason to compliment the misbehaved pupils.

5. Communicate with parents

Inform the parents of misbehaved pupils. Tell them precisely what happened on what is happening. Assume them that you’re doing your best to help turn the behavior around. Ask their support and involvement so that your collaborative effort will really help the child.

6. Conduct a case study

Case study refers to process or record of research of the development of situation over a period of time. Conducting a case study will lead the teacher to a more specific and clearer understanding on why does a certain student misbehaved. You will identify what caused such behavior. Therefore you could identify the suitable strategy in dealing with him. The findings of the case study will not only benefit you but could also be a reference to your co-teachers.

Applying these ways on your teaching will surely help you maintain better control and establish a calmer, more productive atmosphere for your pupils.
